UMass Falls To North Texas At Hall Of Fame Classic, 62-44

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell to North Texas on Saturday at the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, 62-44. Matt Cross led all Minutemen (8-3 Overall) with a team-high 19 points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds.

Cross put in eight of his points in the early going as he scored eight of the opening nine points as the Minutemen took a 9-6 lead through the first seven minutes of play. UMass used a 7-0 scoring run to take a 16-11 advantage with 7:28 remaining while holding the Mean Green without a field goal for 6:11 of game action. North Texas went on to score six consecutive to tie things up at 18-18 before the Minutemen took a 26-22 advantage into the halftime break.

The Minutemen held a 25-13 advantage on the boards in the first half while allowing just one rebound through the opening 20 minutes of play. Dyondre Dominguez ended the first half with 10 points and six rebounds on his way to finishing with 12 points and a tied for career-high nine rebounds for the second straight game.

North Texas opened the second half by outscoring the Minutemen 22-9 in the first 10 minutes to take its then largest lead of the day at 44-35. The Mean Green shot 31-percent for the game and went 26-for-34 from the free throw line for 77-percent. Tylor Perry led all scorers with 23 points for North Texas while Kai Huntsberry added 14.

UMass pulled back within five points at 45-40 following a Cross jumper in the paint with 7:57 to go and made it a six-point game at 50-44 with 4:23 left after North Texas took a 10-point lead. The Mean Green pulled away with a 12-0 run to finish out the game.

The Minutemen return home to the Mullins Center to round out non-conference play with a Tuesday night matchup against Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
