Second Half Rally Lifts UMass Over Dartmouth, 68-57

Dyondre Dominguez scored all 14 of his points in the second half while T.J. Weeks Jr. and Matt Cross each finished in double figures.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team outscored Dartmouth by 18 points in the second half on its way to a 68-57 win to close out non-conference play on Tuesday night in the Mullins Center. Dyondre Dominguez scored all 14 of his points in the second half as the Minutemen (9-3 Overall) shot 52-percent from the field in the final 20 minutes.
Dartmouth used a couple of 6-0 scoring runs in the first half to stretch their lead to as many as 10 points before a Matt Cross triple trimmed the UMass deficit to seven at the halftime break. The Big Green shot 46-percent from the field in the opening half before being held to 6-of-30 for 20-percent in the second half.
Trailing by 10 at 42-32 with 15:59 remaining, UMass mounted its comeback to tie at 46-46 after back-to-back 3-pointers by T.J. Weeks Jr. Weeks poured in 13 of his team-leading 19 points in the second half and finished the night 5-of-8 from 3-point range. The redshirt junior also added a team-high five assists and two steals.
Dominguez followed with a hook shot that gave the Minutemen their first lead since the 7:04 mark in the first half with 9:14 left in the game. Isaac Kante followed with a pair of free throws to give UMass a four-point advantage as part of a 15-1 scoring run for the Minutemen over 4:45 of game time. Kante finished the game 6-of-7 from the line for a UMass squad that shot 12-of-17 from the stripe in the second half and 68-percent for the game.
The Minutemen used a 13-2 run to build their first double-digit lead of the night, knocking down six of their prior eight shots to help make it 63-52 with just under three minutes remaining.
Matt Cross narrowly missed out on his second consecutive double double as he finished with 16 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists on the night. Tafara Gapare added five points and a career-high seven rebounds off the bench.
UMass begins Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. at St. Bonaventure before hosting Saint Louis in the Mullins Center on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m. for the home league opener.
