Breen is the only Atlantic 10 player to be named to award list.
ATLANTA - Graduate student Sam Breen is one of 50 members to land herself on the 2023 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Watch List, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Friday afternoon. The Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, native, is the only Atlantic 10 player to be named to the award list.
"We have selected an elite group of athletes for the 2023 Jersey Mike's Women's Naismith Trophy watch list this year, and we look forward to keeping an eye on these stellar players and adding additional excellent players as the season progresses," said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Breen averaged 17.3 points per game, totaling 571 points last season, while averaging 10.1 rebounds per game (332 total). The Gibsonia, Pa., native, finished fourth in the A-10 Conference in scoring with her points per game average and first in the league in total rebounds, while sitting in 20th in the nation. She registered 17 double-doubles this season, tying for 18th in the country, and moving her career total to 40. She was the only A-10 player to record 10-plus double-doubles last year.
During the 2021-22 season, the graduate student was tabbed the A-10 Player of the Year and became a 2022 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Semifinalist. Breen also received A-10 All-Conference First Team, All-Academic and All-Championship Team honors, as well as garnering the A-10 Tournament's Most Outstanding Player accolade. She was a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team and the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, while earning a spot on the 2021 Gulf Coast Showcase All-Tournament Team last season.
The midseason 30 team will be announced in early January, and then the competition will be narrowed down to 10 national semifinalists in early March. Four finalists will be named on March 21, 2023, and the winner of the 2023 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy for Women's Player of the Year will be announced on March 29, 2023.
The Big Ten Conference placed the most athletes on the watch list with 10. The ACC, Pac-12 and SEC are close behind with nine candidates apiece. South Carolina, the 2022 NCAA Women's Basketball National Champions, has three players on the list, which ties them with Tennessee for most candidates from a single school.
The Atlanta Tipoff Club, founded during the 1956-57 season, is committed to promoting the game of basketball and recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of those who make the game so exciting. The Atlanta Tipoff Club administers the Naismith Awards, the most prestigious national honors in all of college and high school basketball. Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, inventor of the game of basketball, the family of Naismith Awards annually recognizes the most outstanding men's and women's college and high school basketball players and coaches. Other Naismith Awards are presented to the men's and women's college basketball defensive players of the year, as well as lifetime achievement awards to basketball officials and outstanding contributors to the game. UCLA's Lew Alcindor received the first Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy in 1969, while the late Anne Donovan (Old Dominion) was the inaugural women's recipient in 1983. Corporate partners of the Naismith Awards include Jersey Mike's and Werner Ladder.
