Women’s Basketball Picks Up Sixth Straight With 72-57 Triumph Over Yale

Breen and Mayo led the Minutewomen with 20-plus points apiece.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball earned its sixth straight victory with a 72-57 win over Yale University on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Graduate student Sam Breen and junior Ber'Nyah Mayo reached double figures, tallying 25 and 21 points, respectively
 
In addition to leading the team in points, Breen garnered her fourth double-double of the season, and 44th of her career, after recording a game-high 15 rebounds. Mayo registered a career best with her 21 points and had a game best five steals on the night. Destiney Philoxy led the way in assists with five, needing only seven more to become the program's all-time career assists leader. Laila Fair tallied the Minutewomen's only two blocks, just one shy of matching her career-high.
 
UMass shot 77.3 percent (17-for-22) from the free throw line and outrebounded the Bulldogs 39-35.
 
Yale took an early 3-0 lead off a three ball only a minute into the contest, before Mayo closed the gap to one with a layup. The Minutewomen and Bulldogsknotted up the game at four apiece, before tying once again at 6-6. UMass went on a 12-4 run to maintain a 16-10 lead for five minutes and 50 seconds. Yale came back within five, as the teams headed into the second quarter at 18-13, in favor of Massachusetts.
 
Back-to-back-to-back baskets for the Minutewomen, capped by a triple from Sydney Taylor put UMass on a 7-0 run to pull ahead, 25-13. The two teams traded a pair of points, as Massachusetts held on to a 29-17 lead. The Minutewomen scored seven more points to the Bulldogs five, with UMass hanging on to a 31-20 heading into halftime.
 
Both teams scored 19 points apiece in the third quarter, with the Minutemen holding on to a 55-41 lead. In the final frame, Massachusetts continued to lead, outscoring Yale, 17-16 in the quarter.
 
Massachusetts hits the road for two contests at the Briann January Classic, hosted by Arizona State, on Friday, Dec. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 3, in Tempe, Arizona. The Minutewomen take on Arizona State on Friday at 8 p.m. ET on ASU Live Stream, before competing against Missouri on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m. ET.
