Women’s Basketball Extends Streak To Seven After Dominant 88-64 Win Over Arizona State At Briann January Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – A dominant team performance gave the University of Massachusetts women's basketball its seventh consecutive victory after taking down Arizona State University, 88-64, at the Desert Financial Arena on Friday night. Four Minutewomen recorded career bests on the night, while graduate student Sam Breen registered her fifth double-double of the year.
The win marked the program's first over a Power Five opponent since November 28, when UMass defeated Colorado on the road, 70-62.
Angelique Ngalakulondi led the way with a career- and game-high 21 points, followed by Breen with 16 points and a game best 11 rebounds for her 45th double-double of her career. Destiney Philoxy and Sydney Taylor also reached double figures, tallying 13 apiece. Ber'Nyah Mayo dished out a career and game best 10 assists, while Taylor had a career-high nine dimes. Kristin Williams scored a career best six points on the night and Laila Fair matched her career best in blocks with three. Fair was also one board shy of matching her career-high, registering 10.
UMass shot 50.0 percent (37-of-74) from the field, holding Arizona State to only 29.6 percent (21-of-71). The Minutewomen outrebounded the Sun Devils, 54-43, while also outscoring them 54-28 with points in the paint.
UMass opened the scoring on a layup from Breen, before Arizona State tied it up, 2-2. The Minutewomen went on a small 7-0 run, which included the first triple of the night for Taylor, to make it a 9-2 contest. The Sun Devils came back within one at 9-8, but after a UMass layup, ASU knotted it up at 11 apiece. A 9-0 run for Massachusetts saw two layups from Fair, a three from Taylor and the first pair of points in the Maroon and White uniform for Williams, to end the first quarter with a 20-11 lead.
Massachusetts continued to extend its lead after two good free throws from Mayo making it a 22-12 game in the second quarter. Back-to-back triples from Philoxy pulled UMass ahead 28-14, beginning a 12-0 run. The run capped off with a jumper from Breen, giving the Minutewomen a 20-point lead at 34-14. Arizona State scored 12 more points to UMass' eight, but the Minutewomen held on to a 16-point lead, entering halftime with a 42-26 lead.
The Minutewomen made it a 20-point contest at the 8:40 mark of the third, thanks to back-to-back layups by Ngalakulondi, before an 8-0 run extended the teams lead to 54-28. Williams drained her first career three-pointer with 4:27 remaining in the quarter to give UMass a 28-point lead at 57-29. Arizona State closed the gap to 19 points, the smallest lead of the third quarter for the Minutewomen, with 43 seconds left on the clock, but Massachusetts grabbed four more points to enter the final frame with a 67-44 lead.
UMass kept rolling in the fourth, going on a 9-0 run, finished by a layup from Fair to make it 78-51. Another 7-0 run for the Minutewomen gave the team a 32-point advantage, the largest lead of the night, over the Sun Devils at 85-53. With three minutes and 11 seconds left, Arizona State outscored Massachusetts, 11-3, but UMass came out on top, 88-64.
