CONWAY, S.C. - The Massachusetts Minutemen play for their first in-season tournament title since 2013 on Sunday when they take on Charlotte in the Myrtle Beach Invitational championship game. The Minutemen and 49ers tip-off at 1 p.m. on ESPN2.
The Title Game
Sunday's Myrtle Beach Invitational championship game marks the first in-season championship game for the Minutemen since they won the Charleston Classic in November of 2013.
He Did It Again
Noah Fernandes came up big to beat the buzzer once again for the Minutemen as he knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left to help UMass advance with a 71-69 win over Murray State. Fernandes knocked down a buzzer-beater from nearly the same spot on the other side of the court in a win over Rutgers last year on Nov. 27.
Cross Double-Double
Matt Cross posted his first UMass double-double in Friday's win over Murray State, finishing with 15 points and 14 boards. The double-double marked the second of his collegiate career, with the first coming by way of a 13 point, 15 rebound performance last season against North Carolina while at Louisville.
Last Time Out
UMass had three scorers finish in double figures in the win over Murray State, led by 15 from Matt Cross and 14 from Noah Fernandes. T.J. Weeks Jr. added 13 on 4-of-5 shooting from range and knocked down a key 3-pointer with 1:31 left to give the Minutemen a 68-65 lead. UMass trailed by as many as 10 with 6:37 remaining and took it's first lead since the 5:35 mark of the first half with just over two minutes remaining.
Second Half Squad
The Minutemen have outscored their opponents by 26 in the second half of games this year while being outscoring by six in the opening halves. In their three wins this season, UMass has outscored the opponent by an average of eight points over the final 20 minutes.
Big Time Blocks
UMass set multiple new Myrtle Beach Invitational records in blocks in the win over Colorado, led by Wildens Leveque's tournament record five blocks. As a team, the Minutemen set a new MBI record for blocks in a game with eight against the Buffaloes.
