UMass Defeats Charlotte To Claim Myrtle Beach Invitational Title

Noah Fernandes was named the Myrtle Beach Invitational Most Valuable Player.
CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team claimed its first in-season tournament title since 2013 with a 60-54 win over Charlotte in the Myrtle Beach Invitational championship game on Sunday afternoon. The Minutemen (4-1 Overall) used an early 12-0 run to take control and held the lead for the remainder of the contest.

The 12-0 run for UMass started and ended with a T.J. Weeks Jr. 3-pointer as he finished the day with 11 points on 3-of-3 from deep and a game-high nine rebounds. The Minutemen took an 18-6 rebound advantage into the break and finished the day with a 10-rebound advantage on the boards.

Matt Cross posted a team-leading 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, knocking down a 3-pointer to give the Minutemen a 13-point lead with just over 10 minutes remaining before ending the half with a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to make it a 38-28 game. UMass shot 60-percent from the field in the opening half and finished the day at 45-percent shooting, including 54-percent from deep on 7-of-13.

UMass had five players finish with eight or more points, including RJ Luis' nine points and six rebounds off the bench. Luis helped UMass pull ahead by 13 once again in the opening frame with a steal and slam followed by a step back jumper with 6:05 left in the first half.

Tournament MVP Noah Fernandes added nine points of his own while Wildens Leveque chipped in eight points with seven rebounds.

The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 29 for a 7 p.m. tip-off at South Florida before returning to Massachusetts for a road game at Harvard on Friday, Dec. 2.
