Massachusetts Men’s Cross Country Wins 2022 New England Championship

BOSTON – University of Massachusetts men's cross country won its sixth New England Championship and second of head coach Tim Ritchie's tenure on Saturday at Franklin Park. The Minutemen led the 20-team competition with a score of 92, while Northeastern followed in second with a score of 107. UMass previously captured New England crowns in 1953, 1961, 1973, 1987 and 2018.

THE UMASS TOP-FIVE

Surafel Mengist was UMass' lead runner for a third straight meet, placing ninth in 25:02 on the 8K course.
Michael Norberg followed in 10^th overall in the field of 130 competitors at 25:05.
Benjamin Burgess placed third for the Minutemen and claimed 22^nd overall in 25:26.
Nicholas Valianti crossed the finish in 25:37 as UMass' No. 4 runner in 25^th overall.
Will Kenney scored for a fourth straight meet, placing fifth on the squad and 26^th overall (25:38).
Other UMass finishes: 28^th – Loeden Rodrigues (25:47), 35^th – Liam Ouellette (25:53)

ALSO IN ACTION FOR UMASS

Robert Carew won the sub varsity race in 25:53, leading all seven UMass runners who finished inside the top-14 in the 93-competitor field.
Matthew George (4^th, 26:14), Adam Thibodeau (5^th, 26:15), Zach Conant (6^th, 26:18), Riley Cole (8^th, 26:32), Xavier Metivier (12^th, 26:53) and Owen Mullahy (14^th, 27:06) rounded out the Minutemen finishers in the sub varsity 8K.

The Minutemen will return to action on Friday, October 21, when the team will head to New Britain, Connecticut for the CCSU Mini Meet.
