Five Finish In Double Figures As UMass Takes Down Saint Louis, 91-85

Noah Fernandes led the way with a game-high 24 points while Javohn Garcia finished with 15.
AMHERST, Mass. – Five Minutemen finished in double figures as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team came away with a 91-85 win over Saint Louis on Thursday night in the Mullins Center. The Minutemen (8-9 Overall, 1-4 Atlantic 10) were led offensively by Noah Fernandes' 24 points while Javohn Garcia added 15 on 5-of-6 from the field.

UMass answered an early Saint Louis (11-6 Overall, 2-2 Atlantic 10) scoring run that saw the Billikens knock down 6-of-7 shots to take a 22-15 lead. The Minutemen strung together a 10-0 run and held Saint Louis without a point for 4:04 of game time to grab a 25-22 advantage following a C.J. Kelly 3-pointer and a Javohn Garcia jumper. Rich Kelly dished out his 500th career assist during the run to become just the 11th active DI player with 1,500 or more career points and 500 or more career assists.

The Minutemen shot just under 41-percent in the opening 20 minutes and trailed 38-37 at the break before posting a 67-percent mark from the field in the second to go along with a 21-of-25 showing from the free throw line. UMass finished the night 29-of-56 from the field for 52-percent.

Fernandes scored 15 of his 24 points in the second half, including nine in the first eight minutes of a back-and-forth second half as both teams were square at 58-58 with 12:33 to go.

Garcia knocked down his only 3-point attempt of the night with 3:53 left to give the Minutemen their largest lead of the game up to that point. Saint Louis responded with a 7-1 scoring run to tie at 78-78 before UMass closed out the night on a 9-2 scoring run that was capped off with a Garcia slam following a Billiken miss.

T.J. Weeks Jr. came up with a clutch block on the potential game-tying layup with 30-seconds left and finished the night with seven points and five rebounds. Greg Jones followed with a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game for a UMass team that finished the night 26-for-33 from the line. Jones finished with a season-high 13 points and hauled in four boards to go along with two steals.

Trent Buttrick and Rich Kelly each finished in double figures with 10 points while C.J. Kelly added a season-high nine rebounds off the bench.
