UMass Falls On The Road At Saint Louis

Trent Buttrick scored a team-high 17 points while Javohn Garcia added all 14 of his points in the second half.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell to Saint Louis 90-59 on Sunday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena. Trent Buttrick scored a team-high 17 points for the Minutemen (8-10 Overall, 1-5 Atlantic 10) while Javohn Garcia scored all 14 of his points in the second half.
 
The matchup started off slow on the offensive end for both sides with the first made basket coming on a Rich Kelly 3-pointer just over three minutes into the contest. Saint Louis (12-6 Overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) strung together a quick 6-0 run over 49-seconds of game time to take an 8-4 lead as the Minutemen started the afternoon just 1-of-7 from the field and ended the first half at 30-percent.
 
Buttrick knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to help make it a one possession game with 10:32 remaining in the first after the Billikens went ahead by six. The forward went 3-for-4 from deep in the first 20 minutes and finished the first half with 12 points and four rebounds.
 
The Minutemen held the Billikens without a field goal for over five minutes of play after Saint Louis took its then largest lead of the half at 21-14 with 9:46 to go. UMass pulled within a point before Saint Louis strung together a 13-3 scoring run over 3:46 to go ahead 35-24 on its way to taking a 37-28 lead into the break.
 
Saint Louis opened the second half by outscoring the Minutemen 12-5 to pull ahead by 16 before following up with an 25-2 run over 7:51 to build a 68-35 lead with just over nine minutes remaining. The Billikens outshot the Minutemen 57-percent to 28-percent over the final 20 minutes and finished the game at 46-percent from the field. Gibson Jimerson led the Billikens with 31 points while Jordan Nesbitt added 17 and 12 rebounds.
 
The Minutemen finished the game at 29-percent from the field and shot 9-of-33 from behind the arc. Michael Steadman added eight points for a UMass team that had nine different Minutemen score.
 
UMass continues Atlantic 10 road play on Wednesday in Philadelphia, Pa. against La Salle at 7 p.m.
