The Minutewomen overcame an early 1-0 deficit to improve to 3-0 on the season.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey erased an early one-goal deficit, rallying to defeat Vermont, 3-1 at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Minutewomen improve to 3-0 to start the year, while the Catamounts fall to 1-2.
UMass found itself trailing early as Katie Hall connected with Clodagh Ferry at the top of the circle for a chip shot over Marlise van Tonder in the third minute.
The Minutewomen responded in short order, though, as freshman Emilie Marchio redirected a ball from Dempsey Campbell into the back of the cage for her first career tally, 9:08 into the contest.
UMass then pulled in front before the first quarter drew to a close. While her initial shot off the penalty corner was stopped, junior Bella Ianni collected her own rebound and sent it home to give the Minutewomen a 2-1 advantage at the 14:18 mark.
Junior Emilie Keij added some insurance late for UMass as she cleaned up a rebound from Amalie Green in the 56th minute to bring the score to 3-1.
The Minutewomen out-shot the Catamounts 19-7 on the day and had 11 penalty corners to Vermont's one. Marlise van Tonder turned aside 5 shots for UMass and Sierra Espeland finished with nine stops for UVM.
Massachusetts will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 5, with a 1 p.m. matchup at UAlbany, the squad's first road contest of the season.
