Overtime Heroics Send Massachusetts Past Maine, 3-2
August 29, 2021 | Field Hockey
Steph Gottwals scored the game-winning to move UMass to 2-0 for the first time since 2017
AMHERST, Mass. – After seeing Maine (0-2) erase a 2-0 deficit in the final five minutes of regulation to force overtime, a resilient Massachusetts field hockey team (2-0) put the pressure on in extra time before Steph Gottwals sent the fans home happy with the game-winning goal to lift the Minutewomen past the Black Bears on Sunday afternoon at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex, 3-2.
The win moves Massachusetts to 2-0 on the young season for the first time since 2017.
UMass, which outshot Maine 10-6 in the game, dominated the overtime period by earning four straight penalty corners in the extra session. On the fourth attempt, Maine goalkeeper Mia Bortley (seven saves), stoned Claire Danahy and Georgie McTear on back-to-back attempts before Gottwals roofed a rebound for her second of the game 4:19 into OT.
Gottwals got the offense going early in the game, as well, scoring her first of the season on a deflection from an Emily Devine shot off a penalty corner just 2:21 into the game. At the other end, Massachusetts goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder (four saves) and the Minutewomen defense kept Maine off the board despite seven Black Bear corners during the opening half.
Massachusetts extended its lead to 2-0 with 1:48 left in the third quarter when McTear put Maine in a spin-cycle, losing a Black Bear defender before turning on a dime and beating Bortley for her second goal of the weekend.
Maine turned up the heat late, though, scoring a pair of goals just 5:01 apart to level the game. The first came from Brooke Sulinski when she redirected an entry from Chloe Walton inside the right post before the Black Bears converted on a corner with 7.7 seconds to go on a goal from Sydney Meader off a corner.
