UMass Blanks Northeastern, 3-0, In Season-Opening Win
August 27, 2021 | Field Hockey
Jess Beech had a goal and an assist for the Minutewomen
AMHERST, Mass. -- The Massachusetts field hockey team (1-0) received goals from three different scorers, a tight effort defensively and five saves from Marlise van Tonder in a 3-0 victory over Northeastern (0-1) in the Minutewomen's season-opener on Friday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of strikes just 1:09 apart, UMass staved off a push from Northeastern as the game wore in, including a stretch of six penalty corners in the fourth quarter, before burying an insurance marker late in regulation to seal the victory.
Jess Beech got the Minutewomen started just 6:16 into the game when she hammered home a rebound following a UMass penalty corner from the left side. Just over one minute later, Georgie McTear made it 2-0 when she rocketed home a penalty corner off a set from Beech and an insert from Amalie Green that beat Northeastern goalkeeper Julia Gluyas (two saves) for the early Massachusetts advantage.
Northeastern found its legs as the game wore on, challenging the Minutewomen at every turn, but van Tonder and the UMass defense refused to break. It looked like the Huskies might break through in the fourth when NU was awarded six penalty corners, but Massachusetts stood tall to keep Northeastern off the board.
Izzy Acquaviva put the Minutewomen up for good with 7:21 to play when she took a pass from Green and sent a shot past Erin Savage (two saves) for her first collegiate strike.
UMass will return to The 'Chuk on Sunday when the Minutewomen host Maine at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
