The 6-3, 191-pound left shot defenseman joins the Minutemen from Denver and was fourth round draft pick in 2018.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has added 6-3, 191-pound left shot defenseman Slava Demin for the 2021-22 season, it was announced on Wednesday. Demin comes to UMass after three seasons at Denver and is the third new addition to the UMass roster for the upcoming season, joining graduate transfer forward Matt Baker and incoming freshman forward Eric DeDobbelaer.
"Stanislav comes to us by way of transfer from the University of Denver, said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Slava is another NHL prospect, he was originally drafted in the fourth round by Las Vegas, but his rights are currently owned by the Chicago Blackhawks. Slava is a big body defenseman with great mobility and underrated offensive ability. We hope to see his offensive side take a big step forward this year, but he will be leaned on to be a really strong two-way defenseman who will be effective at both ends of the rink."
Demin was selected 99th overall in the 2018 NHL Draft and his rights were required by Chicago in February 2020. He played in 96 games over three seasons at Denver and registered 31 points on nine goals and 22 assists and was +29 for the Pioneers. The Cypress, California native earned NCHC Academic All-Conference and NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete recognition three times and was tabbed an AHCA All-American Scholar in 2019. As a freshman in 2018-19, Demin helped Denver reach the Frozen Four as one of seven Pioneers to play in all 41 games, posting a +19 plus/minus rating to lead Denver defensemen and rank sixth among NCAA Freshmen.
Prior to his collegiate career, Demin recorded 72 points (14g, 58a) in 110 games with the Wenathcee Wild of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) from 2016-2018. In 2017-18 he logged 45 points (9g, 36a) in 57 games, helping lead the Wild to a BCHL Championship and was tabbed a 2018 BCHL Second-Team All-Star.
Demin represented the United States at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup in 2017 and was selected to participate in the U.S. World Junior Summer Showcase in 2019.
