Minutemen Split Doubleheader at Fordham

Massachusetts secures 8-3 game two win and looks for series victory Sunday at noon
BRONX, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts baseball came up short in a game one rally, but the Minutemen bats were hot early in game two to help secure a doubleheader split with Fordham at Houlihan Park on Saturday.
UMass will look to secure a series victory in the final matchup with the Rams, a noon tilt on Sun., May 2.
Game 1
Fordham 5, Massachusetts 3 (7 innings)
Massachusetts sent eight men to bat in its half of the sixth, plating three runs but could get no closer. Eddy Hart doubled, walked twice and scored a run in the loss.
Fordham jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, a score that remained until the sixth. Kevin Skagerlind led off the frame battling back in the count for a walk, later stealing second and getting to third on Dylan Judd's first-pitch single. Skagerlind would go on to score on a wild pitch. Hart crossed the plate on Aidan Wilde's base hit through the left side and Judd came 90 feet home on Chris Pearsons' single.
That left Wilde at third and Pearsons on first with the tying run, but two strikeouts got Fordham out of the inning and the Minutemen were unable to get anyone past first base in their final turn at bat.
Matt Mikulski earned the win in a 5.2-inning start for Fordham, and UMass' Jack Steele received the loss after working four innings. Ben Kovel logged the save for the Rams.
Game 2
Massachusetts 8, Fordham 3 (7 innings)
The Maroon and White pounded out six runs in the first two innings and never looked back, securing the doubleheader split. Eddy Hart went 2-for-3, again including a double that knocked in two and Hart also scored twice. Mike Gervasi moved over to catcher in place of Dylan Judd and had two RBI as well.
UMass struck first in its first at bat beginning with a double steal. Rams catcher Andy Semo fired to third in an attempt to nail left fielder Collin Shapiro but the throw got away and allowed Shapiro to come home. In the second inning, the Minutemen capitalized on two more errors, adding an RBI single by first baseman Steve Luttazi, Hart's two-run double and an infield single for Judd. Michael Rounds also scored earlier in the inning on a Fordham miscue.
Gervasi brought Hart home on a sac fly in the fifth and Shapiro scored again in the seventh when Gervasi hit into a fielder's choice.
Zack Given dealt 5.2 innings of one-run ball for the win, scattering six hits and three walks against five strikeouts. Jared Henry came on to finish the final 1.1 innings for the Minutemen. For Fordham, Garrett Crowley took the loss charged with UMass' first three runs, although none were earned.
