#6 Massachusetts Hockey Skates To 3-3 Tie With Maine In Regular Season Finale
March 05, 2021 | Hockey
The Black Bears took the shootout, 2-1 as Minutemen enter the postseason at 13-5-4.
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 6 University of Massachusetts hockey erased an early 1-0 deficit, but Maine fought back from down 3-1 to force a 3-3 tie at the Mullins Center on Friday afternoon. The Black Bears (3-10-2) went on to take the extra point in the Hockey East standings with a 2-1 shootout win and the Minutemen will enter the league tournament with a record of 13-5-4.
Â
"I give Maine a lot of credit," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel, "All year long they've had to play on the road. I can't imagine how difficult that would be and I give them a lot of credit tonight. In the first period we got up 3-1 and they stabilized the game and then, really, I felt like they played a really good road game. On the opposite side of that, I was extremely disappointed with our effort tonight. I rarely say that, but we were sloppy, we were not prepared, cheated the game a lot and absolutely got what we deserved tonight. Hopefully it's a wakeup call going into the playoffs."
Maine opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the first period when Emil Westerlund rung a shot inside the far post off a feed from Lynden Breen behind the net with Simon Butala earning the secondary helper.
Â
The Minutemen were quick to respond with the equalizer at the 3:08 mark. Redshirt senior Carson Gicewicz using a screen to flip the puck past Victor Ostman after senior Jake Gaudet carried the puck into the zone and dished it off in front. Senior Oliver Chau collected an assist on the play, as well.
Â
UMass pulled in front 8:09 into the opening stanza when Ty Farmer cleaned up a rebound from senior Philip Lagunov and freshman Ryan Sullivan to give the Minutemen a 2-1 edge.
Â
Junior Marc Del Gaizo then capped the scoring of the period with his second goal in as many games, hammering home a pass from Gicewicz after Chau won a neutral zone battle along the wall at 12:31.
Â
However in the third period, the Black Bears managed to mount a rally. In the final seconds of a Maine power play, Adrien Bisson tapped a puck home at the doorstep from Veli-Matti Tiuraniemi and John Mulera at 11:54 to pull the squad within one.
Â
Eduards Tralmaks later netted the equalizer at the 15:46 mark, tucking a shot from the blue line under the crossbar from Tiuraniemi and Adam Dawe and leveling the score at 3-3.
Â
UMass would battle through a penalty kill in the extra period, but Linden Breen opened the shootout with a goal for Maine and, despite Zac Jones extending the shootout for the Minutemen, Donavan Houle converted the deciding attempt in the fourth round for the Black Bears.
Â
UMass out-shot Maine, 33-19 in the contest and was 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Black Bears were 1-for-3. Junior Filip Lindberg had 16 saves for the Minutemen and Victor Ostman totaled 30 stops in net for Maine.
