The Setauket, New York, native is the first-ever UMass player to be honored as the best American-born college hockey player in New England.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey junior assistant captain Bobby Trivigno has been named the recipient of the 69th Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced on Monday. Trivigno, a forward from Setauket, New York, is the first-ever UMass player to earn the honor.

Trivigno helped UMass to its first Hockey East Tournament Championship, leading the squad with six points over three tournament games on two goals and four assists and was +6, to garner Tournament MVP recognition along with a spot on the Steve Nazro Hockey East All-Tournament Team.

The 2021 Hockey East First-Team All-Star leads the Minutemen in scoring to date with 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points. He is currently tied for 10th nationally in points and points per-game (1.20), tied for 10th in assists and seventh in assists per-game (0.80). Of the 16 forwards and defensemen among the 19 semifinalists for this year's Walter Brown Award, he had the highest plus-minus rating, with +17. Trivigno has three game winners, one power-play goal and one shorthanded tally through 25 contests and has helped Massachusetts to a 16-5-4 record to date.

"I think Bobby single-handedly elevated our team to a championship level," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "He's far and away our best forward and he's a tremendous leader. Our team just followed his lead all year. He's completely deserving of this award."

The nation's oldest nationally-recognized college hockey honor, the Walter Brown Award was established in 1953 by the members of the 1933 Massachusetts Rangers, the first American team ever to win the World Championship Tournament. Brown coached the Rangers to the title in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where the team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime in the championship game.
