ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis (13-5, 6-4) shot 50% from the floor and built on an 11-point halftime lead to knock off the UMass men's basketball team (7-6, 6-4) on Monday night at Chaifetz Arena, 78-57.

Noah Fernandes led the Minutemen with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 4-of-8 from three. He was joined in double-figures by captain Carl Pierre (12 points; 5-of-11 overall) and Tre Mitchell (10 points, five points, four assists).

As a team, UMass shot 42% from the floor and 8-of-23 from three-point range. SLU, meanwhile, was 30-of-60 from the floor along with 21 assists and 35 points off the bench. Five Billikens reached double-figures, led by 16 points from Javonte Perkins. He was joined by Jordan Goodwin (13, 11 rebounds, eight assists), Fred Thatch Jr. (13), Hasahn French (12) and Terrence Hargrove Jr. (10).

Neither team really found a rhythm in a first half plagued by fouls, with both Mitchell and Javohn Garcia tagged with two apiece before the under-5 mark of the half before McCrory was assessed a third with 1:58 to go.

UMass battled through it, though, shooting 42% in the first half including a 5-of-12 mark from deep led by Pierre's 10 points (4-of-7 overall, 2-of-4 from three) to lead the visitors.Â

Saint Louis, which went into the bonus with 8:31 left in the half, went 10-of-12 from the line to slowly build up its lead to 11 points at the break. From the floor, the Billikens shot 52% with 12 assists on 15 made field goals. Goodwin dropped 13 in the half along with six rebounds and five assists to lead a SLU that closed the half on an 8-3 run to lead at recess, 42-31.

The Billikens came out of the break and ballooned its advantage up to 16 thanks to a three from Perkins and layup from French 2:30 into the half. But the Minutemen would continue to chip away, using a 9-2 run capped by a 16-footer by Fernandes to cut the deficit down to nine points with 13:44 left.

From there though, it was a SLU 13-0 run over 3:25 that got the Billiken lead back up to double-digits and out of reach for Massachusetts.
