Walker will serve as the teamās quarterbacks coach
AMHERST, Mass. āĀ University of Massachusetts football and head coach Walt Bell announced Frederick Walker as the team's quarterbacks coach on Thursday. Walker arrives at Massachusetts following coaching roles at Duke, Mississippi State, Murray State, Tennessee Tech and Troy.
Ā
Most recently, Walker tutored the Murray State wide receivers for the prior year. The Racers did not compete in the Fall, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ā
Walker joined the Duke football staff as an offensive assistant ahead of the 2018 season and worked primarily with the Blue Devils' quarterbacks for two seasons. He contributed to the team's offensive success in 2018 as Duke registered eight wins, including an Independence Bowl victory over Temple. Individually, Walker's mentorship of Daniel Jones helped Jones post career highs in QB rating and touchdown passes en route to his selection by the New York Giants as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Ā
Walker served on-staff at Tennessee Tech in 2017 as the team's wide receivers coach. The Golden Eagles averaged nearly 200 yards per game across the receiving corps, led by All-OVC First Team recipient Dontez Byrd's record-setting 1,000-yard campaign.
Ā
Prior to his tenure at Tennessee Tech, Walker spent two seasons as a graduate assistant and offensive analyst at Troy University in 2015 and 2016. There he worked alongside UMass alumnus Neal Brown, then the head coach at Troy and now the head coach at West Virginia.
Ā
The Trojans went 10-3 overall in 2016 and the season culminated in a 28-23 Dollar General Bowl victory over Ohio. Offense was a catalyst for the team's season-long success as Troy averaged 33.7 points and 429.6 total offensive yards per game. Additionally, Walker worked with now-Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew during their shared tenure at Troy.
Ā
Walker graduated from Mississippi State in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and earned his master's degree in criminal justice from Troy University. A native of Canton, Mississippi, Walker served as a student assistant coach at Mississippi State prior to graduation, working primarily with the team's quarterbacks.
Ā
Walker helped in the development of two standout Bulldogs quarterbacks while in Starville: Tyler Russell and Dak Prescott. Russell reset numerous single-season QB records in 2012, including passer efficiency, completions, passing yards per game, total passing yards, 200+ passing yard games and touchdowns thrown. Prescott eclipsed those in 2014 en route to re-writing the Mississippi State career QB records and becoming an all-American. He later heard his name called in the 2016 NFL Draft when the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the fourth round.
Ā
During his undergraduate tenure in Starkville, the Bulldogs posted four bowl appearances, including the 2011 Music City Bowl vs. Wake Forest, the 2012 TaxSlayer.com Bowl vs. Northwestern, the 2013 Liberty Bowl vs. Rice and the 2014 Orange Bowl vs. Georgia Tech.
Ā
Walker is joined in Amherst by his fiancé, Jamie Holley.
