Women’s Basketball Cruises Past CCSU In Season Opener, 87-50

November 09, 2021 | Women's Basketball

Five Minutewomen finished in double figures, led by 16 points from Sydney Taylor.

AMHERST, Mass. – Five Minutewomen scored in double figures to help the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team defeat Central Connecticut, 87-50, at the Mullins Center in the teams' season opener on Tuesday evening.

Junior Sydney Taylor led the way for UMass with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting, while graduate student Sam Breen added 15, Angelique Nagalakulondi contributed 14, senior Destiney Philoxy had 13 points and Ber'Nyah Mayo chipped in with 12 to go along with 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Philoxy dished 10 assists for a double-double, as well, and snagged two of the team's 10 steals in the contest.

UMass scored the first nine points of the contest. Breen connected early and often around the rim, and the Minutewomen held a five-point advantage after the opening quarter.

UMass extended their lead to 16 by the end of the first half, getting to the free throw line and capitalizing on their fast break opportunities. In total, the Minutewomen outscored the Blue Devils 21-5 on the fast break.

After a pair of field goals to open the third quarter, Central Connecticut gave up 11 unanswered points and saw themselves looking at a 22-point deficit.

Versatility was the driving force for UMass in the third quarter, with six different players finding the back of the net, increasing the lead to 25.

A 9-0 run later to open the fourth quarter, and the game was out of reach for the Blue Devils. The Minutewomen put 87 points up on the scoreboard: a feat they only reached twice in the 2020-21 campaign.

Breen was efficient in all aspects of the game. A member of the A-10 All-Conference First Team a season ago, Breen continued her stellar play and was 7-for-13 from the field while connecting on one of her two three-point attempts.

Standing at 1-0 in the young season, UMass will be back at the Mullins Center this Friday, November 12 to take on Harvard at 5:00 p.m.
