Minutemen Overcome Early Deficit, Defeat UMBC 77-60 In The Opener

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team overcame an early 13-point deficit to come back and defeat UMBC 77-60 on Tuesday night in the Mullins Center. Trent Buttrick scored 13 consecutive points to help the Minutemen maintain their lead after pulling ahead for the first time with 15:50 remaining.

Buttrick finished tied for the game-high in points with 16, including 15 in the second half as he knocked down six of his final seven shot attempts. The forward's second field goal of the night started his streak of 13 straight points for the Minutemen as UMass' lead grew from five to 14 during the span. Buttrick added seven rebounds and five steals on the night.

T.J. Weeks tied Buttrick for the game-high in points with 16 of his own, including six straight in the early going as the Minutemen began their climb back after falling behind 15-2 in the first four minutes of play. The redshirt sophomore added seven boards, three steals, and two blocks in 31 minutes.

UMass pulled within two at 24-22 with 8:45 remaining in the first half on a Noah Fernandes layup before UMBC's lead eventually grew back to nine points on a pair of buckets by Dimitrije Spasojevic with 3:18 remaining in the first. Fernandes finished with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists, including the layup that capped off a 13-2 run and gave the Minutemen their first lead of the night at 40-30 with 15:50 remaining in the game.

Greg Jones added nine points in 16 minutes off the bench for UMass as nine different Minutemen scored on the evening. Rich Kelly dished out a team-high six assists and added eight points in his UMass debut.

The Minutemen head to New Haven, Conn. for a matchup at Yale on Friday at 8 p.m. on ESPN+.
