Men’s Hoops Falls On The Road At Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell to Yale 91-71 on Friday evening at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Minutemen (1-1 Overall) shot just 30-percent in the first half but connected on 41-percent of their shots in the second.
The Minutemen started the game on a 7-0 run with the help of a pair of steals from Trent Buttrick on the first two Yale (2-0 Overall) possessions as the forward scored four points during the run before running into foul trouble early in the opening frame. Buttrick finished with 11 points and four rebounds in 17 minutes.
Yale used an 18-3 run to take a 22-12 lead into the under-12 media timeout and extended its lead to 16 points at 37-21 with 4:23 left in the first. The Bulldogs shot 55-percent from the field and 50-percent from range in the opening 20 minutes and took a 43-30 lead into the locker room.
C.J. Kelly scored seven points in the final three minutes of the half for the Minutemen and finished with eight points in 15 off the bench.
UMass chipped away at the Yale lead to start the second half and pulled within single digits for the first time since the 7:46 mark of the first on a Noah Fernandes layup with 17:47 remaining. Fernandes scored five early second half points to bring the score to 48-40 in Yale's favor on his way to finishing with a team-high 13 points to go along with five boards.
Yale shot 53-percent in the second half and led by as many as 25 with 2:56 remaining on the way to an eventual 91-71 result.
Greg Jones just missed out on a double-double as he finished with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Rich Kelly finished in double figures with 11 points.
The Minutemen return home to the Mullins Center on Monday when they host Penn State for a 7 p.m. tip on CBS Sports Network.
