UNH Bests #8 Massachusetts Hockey, 2-1 In OT
November 20, 2021 | Hockey
Morrow scores with 1.1 seconds to go in regulation to force the extra frame and earn the Minutemen a point in the Hockey East standings.
DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman Scott Morrow scored a last-second goal to send the game to overtime, but No. 8 Massachusetts hockey fell to New Hampshire in the extra frame, 2-1 on Saturday at the Whittemore Center. The setback leaves the Minutemen at 7-4-1 on the season, 5-2-1 in Hockey East, while the Wildcats move to 5-7-1, 3-5-1 in league action.
"Feels like this year in Hockey East every game is going to be a one-goal game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I didn't like the way we started. UNH was the stronger team the first period, but I liked our second and third period. Our power play was ineffective tonight, which was a big factor, but good character by the guys to score late in the game and get us a point."
A late surge by UNH in the final moments of the first period sent UMass to the locker room down, 1-0. Kalle Eriksson found Liam Devlin for a redirect at the back post for the Wildcats' tally with Jackson Pierson earning the secondary assist.
The Minutemen nearly tied the score midway through the second, but senior captain Bobby Trivigno was robbed on a breakaway with Wildcats' goaltender Mike Robinson making a sprawling save at the 9:19 mark.
With 6.1 seconds to go in the third, UMass had an offensive zone draw to the left of Robinson with the extra skater on and senior Anthony Del Gaizo won the puck back to Morrow. Morrow's shot along the ice found its way through traffic and past Robinson with 1.1 ticks left on the clock, extending the contest into OT.
The celebration for the Minutemen was brief, though. Just 37 seconds into the extra frame, Pierson tipped a feed from Eric MacAdams over goaltender Matt Murray for the deciding tally.
UMass finished the contest with a 33-22 advantage in shots on goal and were 0-for-7 on the power play, while the Wildcats were 0-for-4. Murray ended the night with 20 saves for the Minutemen and Robinson had 32 stops for UNH.
UMass will be idle next weekend and will return to action on Friday, December 3, taking on No. 15 UMass Lowell in Lowell at 7 p.m.
