No. 8/9 UMass Hockey Drops Series Finale To Boston University In Overtime

November 13, 2021 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 8/9 University of Massachusetts hockey was handed an overtime loss Saturday night, 4-3, to visiting Boston University on Saturday night at the Mullins Center. With the loss the Minutemen finished the weekend with a shootout win and an overtime heartbreaker.

"I was not happy with the way we started the game," said head coach Greg Carvel following the conclusion of the contest. "BU owned the first period, but I thought the team regrouped and competed hard in the last two periods. Found a way to take the lead, but unfortunately in overtime we gave up possession of the puck too easily in the zone and gave them too much space."

The Terriers held the play for most of the first period, breaking the scoreless tie with 1:59 to play before the break. It was junior forward Jay O'Brien who gave Boston University the advantage, collecting a drop pass from Domenick Fensore and finishing from the left face off dot. The Terriers went to the dressing room with a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal and each team was 0-for-1 on the power play.

Almost halfway through the middle period, BU found the back of the net once again to increase their lead to 2-0. It was a power play tally, with the puck bouncing off the pants of junior center Wilmer Skoog as he stood next to the right post.

Less than two minutes later UMass' offense was ignited, as Matthew Kessel's shot from the point found its way through traffic and past the Terrier netminder. Freshman winger Ryan Lautenbach picked up his first collegiate point on the play with the primary assist and Ryan Ufko added the secondary helper.

With time dwindling in the second period and the Minutemen on the power play, it was Bobby Trivigno who tied the score at two. The senior capitalized on an impressive feed across the slot from Scott Morrow, burying the one-timer for his fourth of the season. Ufko added the secondary assist once again, his second of the night.

It would turn out to be a career night for Ufko, as the freshman scored his first collegiate goal at 5:12 of the third period to give UMass a 3-2 advantage at the time. A cross-check from Colin Felix sent BU to the power play, but a hustle play from Trivigno sent Ufko on a breakaway which he was able to finish.

The Terriers would answer back less than two minutes later to tie the score at three, and for the second straight night these teams would need overtime to decide a winner.

Matching penalties would have the teams skating 3-on-3 for the majority of the extra frame. With 1:31 to play it was junior defenseman Case McCarthy on a one-timer from the slot that sealed the 4-3 victory for the Terriers.

BU finished with the edge in shots on goal, 29-23. The teams each mustered a power play goal, with the Terriers going 1-for-3 and the Minutemen going 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

Matt Murray got the nod once again for UMass in net, turning away 25 of the 29 shots he faced.

The Minutemen will begin a weekend series against New Hampshire next Friday, Nov. 19, with a 7 p.m. contest back at the Mullins Center.
