Wait and Mika provided the tallies for the Minutemen in the squad’s first win at the Tsongas Center since 2011.
LOWELL, Mass. – No. 10 University of Massachusetts hockey outlasted #16 UMass Lowell, 2-1, at the Tsongas Center on Saturday night, completing the weekend sweep of the River Hawks (3-3-0). With the victory, the Minutemen are now 11-5-3 on the season.
Â
"Our teams hadn't won a game here since I got to UMass, so it's a little bit of a monkey off our back," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "It was a really good college hockey game. I expected a low scoring affair today, hard-fought game and it turned out to be that way. I thought it was a really even game, we just found a way to score one more goal than Lowell did. It's a big sweep for us. I'm really proud of this team. I don't know what my expectations were for this group, but they're exceeding it every game."
Â
After a scoreless first, UMass took a 1-0 lead 46 seconds into the second period. Junior Garrett Wait redirected a Zac Jones shot from the point past Henry Welsch for his fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Matthew Kessel collected the secondary helper.
Â
Senior George Mika then doubled the Minutemen's lead at the 9:03 mark, crashing the net to put home a rebound from juniors Anthony Del Gaizo and Colin Felix on the rush.
Â
UMass Lowell trimmed its deficit to one, 4:04 into the third with Lucas Condotta sending a deflection past junior goaltender Filip Lindberg from Zach Kaiser and Chase Blackmun.
Â
UMass' defense held firm the rest of the way, though, despite being outshot 10-5 in the final stanza. The Minutemen finished the night with a 31-29 shot advantage and were 0-for-2 on the power play, while the River Hawks were 0-for-1.
Â
Lindberg made 28 saves en route to the victory and Welsch finished with 29 stops for UMass Lowell.
