#8 Massachusetts Hockey Skates To 1-1 Tie At #18 Providence
January 23, 2021 | Hockey
The Minutemen take the extra point in the Hockey East standings with a 1-0 shootout win on a Zac Jones goal.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 8 University of Massachusetts hockey and No. 18 Providence went to a shootout for a second straight night as the teams tied 1-1 before the Minutemen took the extra point with a 1-0 shootout win in five rounds. UMass is now 9-5-3 on the season, while the Friars sit at 5-5-4.
"It was a very similar game to last night," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Two good defensive teams, strong goaltending again, the difference tonight was we weren't in the penalty box all night. It was a real tight game. They're always tight checking here at Providence. I'm proud of our guys. The power play scored a goal to tie the game. I thought the second half we played pretty well. It was a good solid road game for us and it goes down as a tie, but when you win the shootout it feels like a win. I'm very proud of our effort tonight."
After a scoreless first, Providence broke up the deadlock at the 10:42 mark of the second. Patrick Moynihan's wrist shot off a feed from Brett Berard deflected past junior Filip Lindberg to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.
UMass responded by tying things up at 1-1 on the power play 13:39 into the period. Freshman Josh Lopina hammered home a rebound at the top of the crease from Aaron Bohlinger and Garrett Wait for his sixth of the season.
The teams battled through a scoreless third and overtime period with Lindberg coming up with several big stops in the extra frame, which saw the Friars out-shoot the Minutemen, 6-1.
Both team's shooters were stopped by the goaltenders into the fifth round, which saw Lindberg turn aside an attempt by Greg Printz before sophomore Zac Jones put home the deciding tally.
UMass finished with a 29-26 edge in shots and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Friars were 0-for-2. Lindberg made 25 saves and Jaxson Stauber had 28 stops for Providence.
