Minutewomen End ECAC Indoor Championships With Loss To Cornell

Tennis fell to the Big Red, 4-0, on Sunday
NEW YORK - University of Massachusetts tennis closed out its three-day stay at the ECAC Indoor Championships with a 4-0 loss to Cornell at Columbia's Dick Trivatt Tennis Center on Sunday morning. The loss dropped UMass to 3-5 on the season while Cornell improved to 1-7.
Anna Napadiy and Martina Bocchi were in the midst of a battle with Valerie Ho and Maria Adiaconitei at No. 1 doubles and held a 4-3 edge, but the Big Red's No. 2 and No. 3 pairings secured the doubles point for Cornell.
The Minutewomen also led in a pair of singles matches when play was halted after Cornell secured the victory with triumphs at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Bocchi held a 6-3, 5-3 advantage over Adiaconitei in the No. 2 singles match while Sarah Mezini led 6-1, 6-5 over Khary Bryce at No. 6. However, Big Red wins by Fatima El Ashram (No. 3), Michelle Deng (No. 4) and Sarah Campbell (No. 5) sealed the outcome of the match.
Massachusetts is home next with a Sat., Feb. 15 contest against Army West Point at the Bay Road Tennis Club. Doubles play will begin at 1 p.m.
