Women’s Track & Field Sits Second After Day One At Atlantic 10 Championships

Kopec wins gold in pentathlon, one of four medals the Minutewomen collected on Saturday.

KINGSTON, R.I. – Junior Kira Kopec won gold in pentathlon as the UMass women's track and field program collected four medals on day one of the Atlantic 10 Championships at Rhode Island's Mackal Fieldhouse. Through six scored events, the Minutewomen sit second in the team standings with 37 points, just three points back of George Mason in first.
 
Kopec earned her first ever A-10 title with a career best score of 3,722, which ranks second in program history. She claimed the top spot in shot put (43'1") for 736 points, and was the runner up in 60 meter hurdles (9.03, 904 points), long jump (18'0.25", 697 points) and 800 meter run (2:26.25, 741 points). UMass scored two more in the event, as well, with sophomore Jensen Kingsley taking seventh and junior Emma Jones placing eighth with scores of 3,291 and 3,256, respectively.
 
Senior Jada Harris took down a 34-year old school record in long jump, leaping 19 feet 3.5 inches to silver, which bested Pam Hughes' mark of 19 feet, 1.75 inches from 1986. Senior Danielle Reicherts landed seventh at 18 feet, 2.5 inches as UMass' second scorer in the event.
 
In pole vault, senior Sydney Flanagan picked up a bronze medal after matching her personal best of 11 feet, 11.75 inches, which ranks fifth all-time in program history. Sophomore Sophia Casciano was seventh, clearing 10 feet, 11.75 inches.
 
UMass fourth and final medal of day one came in the distance medley relay as Colette O'Leary, Kaela Hardy, Grace Pettengill and Sarah Conant combined to run 11 minutes, 52.00 seconds and take home bronze.
 
The Minutewomen also advanced seven into Sunday's finals on the track. Harris claimed the top spot in the 60 meter hurdles prelim, tying a meet record at 8.45 seconds.
 
In 500 meter dash, both senior Emilie Cowan and junior Bryanna Rivers advanced, placing first and sixth with times of 1:13.94 and 1:16.75, respectively.
 
Senior Lindsay Witt and junior Abby Collins moved on in 60 meter dash. Witt broke her own school record with a new PR of 7.65 seconds for fourth and Collins was eighth, matching her PR of 7.74, which ranks second in program history.
 
Witt and Cowan both made Sunday's 200 meter final, as well. Witt ran 25.03 seconds to third and Cowan followed in fourth at 25.04 seconds.
 
Action will resume at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Sunday, March 1, with women's high jump beginning at 9 a.m.
