Leidel’s 26 points guide Minutewomen to 19th win in regular season finale
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball never trailed and capped off the regular season with a 73-53 win over Rhode Island on Saturday at the Mullins Center. The Senior Day victory lifts the Minutewomen to 19-10 on the season and the squad finishes the Atlantic 10 slate at 9-7, while URI is 13-15 and 6-10 in the league. Overall, the 19 wins for UMass is the most since 1997-98 and tied for second-most in program history behind the 1995-96 squad (20). The nine wins in A-10 play are the most since 1999-2000 (10).

Prior to the game, the program recognized seniors Hailey Leidel and Vashnie Perry along with their families. In addition, senior student managers Patrick Arsenault (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Abbie Weaver (Lynnfield, Mass.) were honored for their contributions to the program.

Fittingly on Senior Day, Leidel poured in a game and season-high 26 points on 9-of-21 shooting, complemented by Perry's six points, three rebounds and five assists. Junior Sam Breen had her seventh double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and sophomore Destiney Philoxy added 11 points plus seven boards.

Leidel took over sole possession of No. 2 on the program career scoring list and needs 41 points to tie Sue Peters (1,858) for the program record. Leidel also reset the UMass record for games played, appearing in her 121st career contest.

UMas led at the half, 27-24, before an offensive outpouring in the third stanza helped the Minutewomen pull away. Leidel spearheaded an 11-2 run out of the break, capped by a transition three-pointer that forced Rhody into a timeout with 6:50 left. From there, the squad cruised and swelled its advantage to as much as 23 points early in the fourth period.

Massachusetts had only one turnover in the second half and nine total on the day, while forcing 15 Rhody turnovers and scoring 19 points as a result. The Minutewomen dominated the paint, 40-18 and had a 41-35 edge in team rebounds.
The Atlantic 10 Conference will announce final seedings for the 2020 A-10 Women's Basketball Championship on Saturday evening. Regardless of seed, UMass will host a First Round game at the Mullins Center on Tues., March 3 at 7 p.m.
