No. 8 Hockey Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker At No. 14/15 UMass Lowell
February 21, 2020 | Hockey
Leonard scores his 50th career goal and team-leading 21st of the season for the Minutemen in the setback.
LOWELL, Mass. – No. 8 University of Massachusetts hockey dropped a heartbreaker at No. 14/15 UMass Lowell on Friday night as the River Hawks rallied past the Minutemen, 3-2 after netting the deciding tally in the final minute of regulation. The loss leaves UMass at 18-10-2 overall and 11-7-2 in Hockey East, while UMass Lowell moves to 16-9-5 overall and 10-6-4 in league action.
"We felt we had a good start even with giving up the first goal," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We were committed to our game plan and playing UMass hockey. As the game went on, the play was fairly even, but our third period was unacceptable. On the road with a one-goal lead, we have to play mature hockey and finish the game to our standard. Lowell was more willing to do the little things in the third period as they got pucks and bodies to the net. They scored grinding goals in the third and, as a team, we need to be more willing to earn dirty goals with a 60-minute effort."
UMass Lowell opened the scoring at the 4:32 mark as Zach Kaiser's shot found its way through netminder Filip Lindberg and trickled over the goal line.
The River Hawks added another at the 13:30 mark, which was ultimately called back for goaltender interference, but prompted a goaltending switch for the Minutemen.
In the closing minutes of the first, UMass came up with the equalizer on the power play as junior John Leonard was there at the doorstep to clean up a rebound from Marc Del Gaizo at 18:27, leveling the score at 1-1. The tally marked Leonard's nation-leading 21st of the season and his 50th of his career as he became just the seventh player in program history to reach the milestone. Senior Jack Suter earned an assist on the play, as well.
Sophomore Bobby Trivigno later put the Minutemen on top, 2-1, midway through the second period. Seconds after a UMass Lowell penalty expired, Trivigno drove home a cross-ice feed from Suter and Del Gaizo for his ninth of the season at 11:03.
However in the third, the River Hawks managed to tie the score at 2-2 at the 7:37 mark as Carl Berglund cleaned up a loose puck in the slot from Jordan Schulting and Andre Lee.
Then with the potential for overtime looming, UMass Lowell secured the victory with Chris Schultz sneaking a tough-angle shot past goaltender Matt Murray from the corner at 19:33.
The Minutemen finished with a 40-22 advantage in shots and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the River Hawks were 0-for-3. Murray ended the night with 19 saves and Tyler Wall totaled 40 stops for UMass Lowell.
The teams will return to action tomorrow, February 22, with game two of the weekend series slated for 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
