Tennis Wins First A-10 Match Of The Year, 7-0

Minutewomen blank St. Bonaventure at home at the Bay Road Tennis Club
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis claimed its first dual match victory and Atlantic 10 win of the season with a 7-0 sweep of St. Bonaventure at the Bay Road Tennis Club in Amherst, Massachusetts, on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen improved to 1-1 on the year while the Bonnies dropped to 1-2.

Massachusetts notched the doubles point with a three-match sweep, including two close, hard-fought victories.

Sarah Mezini and Jasmin Tripathy powered by Kahlei Reisinger and Paula Velilla 6-2 at No. 3 in the first completed match of the afternoon. Next, Martina Bocchi and Anna Napadiy teamed up for a 7-5 outcome over Andrea Roque and Penelope Abreu at No. 1 before Ashley Avery and Jovana Bogicevic battled past Emily Stanley and Amelia Haley, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 doubles.

The Minutewomen secured the team's first dual match victory of the spring season with consecutive wins by Napadiy, Bogicevic and Avery at No. 1, No. 3 and No.4, respectively.

Napadiy worked quickly for a positive outcome in her first match at No. 1 singles on the season. She took the opening set from Haley, 6-3, and followed with a dominant 6-1 second set for the win. Bogicevic and Avery eased by their Bonnies counterparts at No. 3 and No. 4 as well, as Bogicevic took a 6-3, 6-3 match from Stanley and Avery won 6-4, 6-3 over Reisinger.

Bocchi, playing at No. 2, downed Roque for Massachusetts' fourth singles win of the afternoon. After Roque took the first set, 6-3, Bocchi responded in the second set, 6-2. The senior from Rome, Italy, then won the decisive third set, 7-6 (2).

Tripathy and Mezini secured Massachusetts its daily sweep against Buse Gunay and Velilla at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Tripathy won with a valiant effort in the second and third sets after she dropped the first to Gunay. The sophomore from Thomasville, Georgia, evened the match with her 6-3 triumph in the second set before she secured the comeback victory 11-9 in the third set.

Mezini ousted Velilla 6-4, 6-4 to compete the perfect day for the Minutemwomen.
