The Minutemen outshot the Wildcats, 31-19, but were unable to solve goaltender Mike Robinson.
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 7 University of Massachusetts hockey had a 31-19 shot advantage in the contest, but were unable to solve New Hampshire goaltender Mike Robinson as the Wildcats edged the Minutemen 1-0 on Friday at the Mullins Center. The loss leaves UMass at 16-8-1 overall, 9-5-1 in Hockey East, while UNH improves to 13-9-1 and 7-6-0 in league action.
"The game went as I expected," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "When we played up at UNH earlier in the year it was pretty tight-checking, low-scoring game and the difference in that game was they scored from a point shot and we didn't block it and it was the same way tonight. They get a shot from the point and we don't block it. We just couldn't get to the net and find a puck on our stick. Actually, we were lucky a couple pucks didn't go in our net too. We just couldn't score an ugly goal, but it was a good game. UNH played great and did a good job of keeping us to the outside and we've got to do a better job getting to the inside tomorrow night."
UMass had an opportunity to get on the board 4:47 into the second period when sophomore Bobby Trivigno was awarded a penalty shot after being slashed on a shorthanded break, but his attempt was turned aside by Robinson.
The Wildcats then scored what would be the only tally of the night 12:40 into the second as Filip Engaras sent the puck out to the point for Will MacKinnon whose shot from the blueline tucked underneath the crossbar. Patrick Grasso collected an assist, as well.
UMass had opportunities to net the tying goal down the stretch, including extended offensive zone time with Matt Murray on the bench in the final minute for an extra skater, but Robinson turned aside all 31 Minutemen shots he faced. Murray totaled 18 saves for UMass and UNH was 0-for-4 on the power play for the evening, while the Minutemen were 0-for-5.
The teams will close out their season series tomorrow night, Jan. 25, in Durham, New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
