No. 7 Hockey Battles Back For 1-1 Tie At UNH
January 25, 2020 | Hockey
Jack Suter scores his third of the season to help the Minutemen earn a hard-fought point on the road in Durham.
DURHAM, N.H. – No. 7 University of Massachusetts hockey rallied from a one-goal deficit late in the third period to earn a hard-fought 1-1 tie on the road at New Hampshire on Saturday night. Following the draw, the Minutemen sit at 16-8-2, 9-5-2 in Hockey East, while the Wildcats are now 13-9-2 and 7-6-1 in conference play.
Â
"Another really good hockey game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Very similar to last night, two teams playing a good honest brand of hockey, playing hard, hard-fought, a lot of penalties tonight, which could have determined the game, especially for us, but it didn't. I'm really happy for my guys. They played hard and they found a way to tie on the road late in the game. That was a big character point for us in the league where every single point is going to be huge. I'm really happy with the effort of our group tonight."
Â
In the final minute of the first period, UNH opened the scoring on their first power play opportunity of the night. Charlie Kelleher drove a one-timer past goaltender Filip Lindberg from the left faceoff dot off a feed from Max Gildon and Jackson Pierson at 19:23.
Â
After a scoreless second, UMass came out in the third and controlled much of the possession, out-shooting the Wildcats 14-4 in the period. With just over five minutes to go in regulation, the Minutemen won a faceoff in their defensive zone and senior Jake McLaughlin sent the puck up the wall to sophomore Bobby Trivigno. Trivigno found Suter with a cross-ice pass and senior Jack Suter drove to the net to score the equalizer at 14:37.
Â
Both teams had chances to pull in front in the closing minutes of regulation, but it remained a stalemate through the overtime period that saw the squads each register one shot on goal apiece. UMass finished the night with a 27-19 advantage in shots and was 0-for-7 on the power play, while UNH was 1-for-5.
Â
Lindberg registered 18 saves for the Minutemen and his counterpart, Mike Robinson, had 26 stops for the Wildcats.
Â
UMass will return home next Friday, January 31, to play host to No. 4 Boston College in the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
