No. 10 Hockey Skates Past Vermont, 3-1
January 18, 2020 | Hockey
Leonard, McLaughlin and Kessel all provided goals for the Minutemen to help complete the weekend sweep.
BURLINGTON, Vt. – No. 10 University of Massachusetts hockey used a 2-0 first period lead to skate to a 3-1 win at Vermont on Saturday night. With the victory, the Minutemen improve to 16-7-1 overall, 9-4-1 in Hockey East action, while the Catamounts fall to 3-15-3 overall and 0-11-1 in league play.
Â
"It wasn't easy, Vermont's a pesky team," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "They had momentum for parts of the game, but ultimately we found a way to sweep on the road. That's four big points for us and we had to earn it both nights. Vermont didn't lay down. I thought we did a good job defensively for the most part and it was really nice to see a power-play goal to salt the game away tonight."
Â
Junior John Leonard opened the scoring 1:37 into the contest, picking up a loose puck off a defensive zone faceoff and taking it the length of the ice to score his team-leading 17th of the season on a breakaway.
Â
Senior Jake McLaughlin made it a 2-0 margin for the Minutemen later in the frame, flinging a puck past Stefanos Lekkas from the half-wall with sophomores Ty Farmer and Anthony Del Gaizo picking up the assists at 12:54.
Â
The Catamounts had an opportunity to cut their deficit in half as Max Kaufman was awarded a penalty shot with 4:33 to go in the opening period, but his attempt was easily turned aside by sophomore Filip Lindberg.
Â
Vermont eventually did solve Lindberg, though, pulling to within 2-1 of the Minutemen at the 9:17 mark of the third period. Matt Alvaro was at the back post to put a rebound from Christian Evers and Simon Boyko into an open net.
Â
UMass eventually took the goal back as freshman Matthew Kessel roofed a shot past Lekkas on the power play 17:22 into the final stanza. Sophomore Bobby Trivigno and junior Oliver Chau earned assists on Kessel's seventh tally of the season.
Â
The Minutemen finished with a 39-35 shot advantage and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Catamounts were 0-for-1. Lindberg totaled 34 saves and Lekkas ended the evening with 36 stops.
Â
UMass will return to action next Friday, January 24, when the Minutemen will host New Hampshire at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
