Chaffee’s Hat Trick Helps No. 10 Hockey Down Vermont, 4-0

January 17, 2020 | Hockey

Murray makes 25 saves against the Catamounts to pick up his seventh career shutout, Leonard adds 16th goal of the season in the win, as well.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – No. 10 University of Massachusetts hockey saw both of its Hobey Baker Award nominees combine for four goals, including junior Mitchell Chaffee's first career hat trick as the Minutemen downed Vermont, 4-0 on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The win moves UMass to 15-7-1 overall, 8-4-1 in Hockey East, while the Catamounts fall to 3-14-3 and 0-10-1 in league play.

"I was really happy with the game tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "Vermont plays hard, but I thought our compete level was really good. I thought we were really consistent. I'm really proud of the team tonight. It's not easy to come in here and win on the road but, obviously, we've got to bring it tomorrow night too."

UMass opened the scoring 18:24 into the first when Chaffee roofed one over goaltender Stefanos Lekkas from the slot off a feed from classmates Philp Lagunov and Oliver Chau.

Chaffee doubled the lead at the 6:26 mark of the second period, hammering home a rebound from senior Jack Suter and Chau for his second of the night.

Not to be outdone, fellow Hobey Baker award nominee John Leonard netted his 16th of the season, taking a stretch pass from sophomore Marc Del Gaizo and skating in alone on a breakaway to beat Lekkas for the tally at the 6:40 mark of the third period.

Chaffee completed his hat trick with an empty net goal at 19:57 with senior Jake McLaughlin collecting the assist.

UMass out-shot Vermont, 35-25 and went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Catamounts were 0-for-2. Junior Matt Murray made 25 saves to collect his seventh career shutout and Lekkas totaled 31 stops for UVM.

The teams will close out the weekend series tomorrow night, Jan. 18, at 7:05 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
