Balciunaite Named to Google Cloud Academic All-America Third Team

Atlantic 10 Conference also names rowing alumna to All-Academic Team
AUSTIN, Texas and NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Massachusetts rowing alumna Aiste Balciunaite has been voted to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team as well as the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic Team.

Balciunaite is the first in program history to receive Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades, and the first to receive a national academic award since 2014 when the quartet of Rebecca Adams, Nicole Juul-Hindsgaul, Krysten Menks and Lauren St. Pierre were named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes.

The Atlantic 10 laurels mark the fourth time Balciunaite has been named to the conference's All-Academic Team.

In May Balciunaite was tabbed a Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team pick, advancing to the All-America ballot. That same month she was named one of 10 recipients of UMass' 21st Century Leader Award and recognized at the campus' Undergraduate Commencement.

Both on the water and academically, Balciunaite's time at UMass was nothing short of remarkable. A Commonwealth Honors College student, Balciunaite double majored in chemical engineering and biochemistry and molecular biology, adding a minor in mathematics. She showed leadership in her courses, research labs and as a co-captain of the rowing team.

A three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection, she was twice named to the First Team (2018-19) and once the Second Team (2015). She rode four seat in the Varsity Eight when UMass took home the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship and advanced to the NCAA Championships, before stroking the Varsity Eight on the 2018 A-10 runner-up squad.

In Spring 2018, UMass Athletics honored Balciunaite with the Scholar-Athlete Award. Her academic successes include a 3.99 cumulative grade-point average, work on multiple grant proposals and time as a research assistant in the Commonwealth Honors College.

The Google Cloud Academic All-America program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. Balciunaite was part of the at-large ballot which encompasses a number of sports, including fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis and water polo for both men and women, as well as beach volleyball, bowling, field hockey and rowing for women, and volleyball and wrestling for men.
