The junior took fifth in her heat in Friday afternoon’s first round action.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of Massachusetts women's track and field junior Jada Harris placed 29th out of in a field of 48 competitors in the first round of 100 meter hurdles at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships on Friday afternoon at North Florida's Hodges Stadium.

Harris ran 13.60 seconds to fifth in her heat. The three fastest in each heat plus the next six fastest times advanced to the quarterfinal round, a total of 24 runners.

The Bridgeport, Connecticut native's season will continue, however, as Harris qualified for the NCAA Championships in two weeks in Austin, Texas, after taking eighth in yesterday's high jump competition.

Harris has enjoyed a stellar junior campaign for the Minutewomen, capturing both Atlantic 10 and New England high jump titles and her third straight A-10 gold in 100 meter hurdles.

At the New England Championships, Harris not only won high jump, but set a 100 hurdles PR that earned her a spot at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships. Harris broke Rose Bryan's UMass record of 13.76, which had stood since 1999, running 13.50 seconds to second place. She then improved upon her record in the final with a time of 13.41 seconds to claim silver, shaving .09 seconds off her prelim performance.

Harris punched her ticket to Austin by matching her her personal best and UMass school record with a height of 5 feet, 8.75 inches. Harris was the only competitor in her flight to clear the first three heights (5'5", 5'7", 5'8.75") on her first attempts.

The high jump competition at the NCAA Championships is slated for Saturday, June 8, at 6 p.m.
