Westhoff Captures New England 10K Title

The Minutemen sit tied for second in team scoring after day one.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Kendall Westhoff earned gold in the 10,000 meter run to highlight day one of the New England Championships for University of Massachusetts men's track and field on Friday at Southern Connecticut. Through six scored events the Minutemen are tied with Rhode Island for second with 20 points in the field of 22 teams.
 
Westhoff completed the 10K with his winning time of 31 minutes, 14.04 seconds, while freshman Nathan Johnson also landed in the scoring, taking fifth at 32 minutes, 21.66 seconds.
 
Senior Michael Famiglietti provided points for UMass in the 5,000 meter run, taking sixth in 14 minutes, 52.37 seconds.
 
Senior Myles McDermott landed seventh in long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 9 inches, while junior Noah Kortkamp followed in eighth, also at 22 feet, 9 inches.
 
Junior Jordan Howard advanced to Saturday's 100 meter dash final, placing third in the preliminaries at 10.91 seconds.
 
Action resumes at the New England Championships tomorrow, May 11, with decathlon at 10 a.m.
