Tennis Continues Winning Ways With 5-2 Victory Over Davidson

Minutewomen improve to 13-4 overall, 3-1 in the Atlantic 10
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts tennis took the doubles point on a tie-breaker in the No. 3 match and secured the team victory with a strong start to singles play en route to a 5-2 win over Davidson at the Bay Road Tennis Club on Friday night. The victory improved Massachusetts to 13-4 overall - matching their wins total from a year ago - and 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Davidson dropped to 10-9 on the year and 3-3 in league action.
The Minutewomen needed the third match tie-breaker to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead headed to singles. After Davidson took the No. 1 match, Jodie Lawrence-Taylor and Anna Napadiy downed Samantha Armas and Alexandra Abele at No. 2 by a 6-3 margin. Ruth Crawford and Ashley Avery followed with a 7-6 (6) triumph over Gabrielle Centenari and Nicole Krykanov at No. 3 as Massachusetts completed the doubles point-securing rally.
The back-to-back wins in doubles sparked the Maroon and White in singles play as UMass took the first three matches for the win-securing 4-0 advantage.
Janja Kovacevic downed Davidson's top player Megan Scholvinck at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1 shortly before Crawford wrapped up a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Centenari at No. 3. Napadiy secured the team win at No. 4 when she followed with a 6-2, 6-4 outcome against Armas.
After Davidson got on the board at No. 2 singles, Martina Bocchi added another individual victory for the Minutewomen at No. 5. Bocchi took to the court against Elizabeth Truluck and produced a 6-4, 6-2 win.
Massachusetts returns to its home courts for its next match, a Fri., April 12 meeting with Stony Brook at 3 p.m.
