Wins at No. 2-4 singles, doubles point seal strong day
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts tennis finished a dominant effort at home on the Mullins Center Tennis Courts with a 4-0 shutout of visiting-Stony Brook on Friday afternoon. The Minutewomen won for the fourth consecutive time and the 12th in the last 14 matches, and improved to 14-4 overall. Stony Brook fell to 13-3 on the year with the loss.
"Today was a full team effort from start-to-finish by all 10," said head coach Juancarlos Nunez. "Conditions were difficult out there for both teams. Stony Brook is a well-coached program that always competes well and makes you work for everything. We knew we had to be ready for them today and our team toughness and fight were the keys to our success."
No. 1 and No. 2 doubles secured the first point of the day for Massachusetts. Janja Kovacevic and Martina Bocchi downed Jamie Wei and Nolwenn Cardoso 6-2 before Jodie Lawrence-Taylor and Anna Napadiy took a 6-3 win from Sasha Bekirova and Elizabeth Pam.
With the doubles point in-hand, Massachusetts quickly secured the match with victories at No. 2-4 singles.
Ruth Crawford doubled Massachusetts' lead with her 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Bekirova before Lawrence-Taylor bested Cardoso 6-2, 6-2. Napadiy totaled the deciding match victory when she bested Maria Pinto Ribeiro at No. 4 by a 6-1, 6-3 margin.
Massachusetts caps non-conference play on the road at Bryant (8-8 overall) on Sun., April 14 with an 11 a.m. match.
