UMass Tennis Sneaks Away From UConn With 4-3 Win

Minutewomen take final two singles matches for comeback victory
STORRS, Conn. - University of Massachusetts tennis overcame multiple deficits for a 4-3 comeback win at the University of Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon. After dropping the doubles point and trading singles victories back-and-forth with the Huskies without taking the lead, the Minutewomen sealed the match with consecutive wins at No. 1 and No. 6.
Massachusetts improved to 12-4 with the comeback while Connecticut dropped to 4-10 with the loss.
The Huskies picked up the doubles points via wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Janja Kovacevic and Martina Bocchi won at No. 1 doubles for the Minutewomen, 6-3, over Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph and Luciana Rabines.
The Minutewomen evened the score for the first time early in singles play when Anna Napadiy downed Cassie Chung comfortably 6-1, 6-2; however, the Huskies went back ahead when Julieanne Bou downed Ruth Crawford 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
Massachusetts again knotted the score when Jovana Bogicevic bettered Jacqueline Lazaro on the No. 5 court 6-2, 6-4, but the tie was short-lived as UConn battled back at No. 3 with Mireilla Moreau over Bocchi 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
After Connecticut moved within one victory of taking the match, Massachusetts put together consecutive wins from Kovacevic and Jasmin Tripathy for the 4-3 triumph.
Kovacevic challenged Fitz-Randolph at No. 1 singles and evened the score with a pair of set tie-breaker wins 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5). Tripathy followed with a three-set battle for the rivalry match triumph and worked a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory from Elizabeth Kozyi at No. 6 singles for the team's 12th win of the year.
Massachusetts returns home for a Fri., April 5 meeting with Davidson (10-8 overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) at 6 p.m.
