Harney works seven innings strong, Dow closes book for first career save
PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts baseball jumped out to a 4-0 lead and added an insurance run in the ninth to take the series rubber game over La Salle, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. The win is the 12th for the Minutemen in the squad's last 17 games and also gives the ball club its fourth consecutive weekend series victory.
Junior Eddy Hart had three RBI on a bases-loaded double while senior Ryan Lever (3-for-4), classmate Alec Norton (2-for-5) and redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro (2-for-4) had multi-hit performances.
Sophomore Sean Harney (3-3) was the winner on the mound, recording four strikeouts over his seven innings of work. Only an infield single and four walks were charged to Harney over the first six innings of the ballgame. Freshman Kevin Dow then came on for the final two frames and closed the door with two strikeouts for his first career save.
Lever sparked a four-run second inning for the Minutemen with a one-out single, stealing second base and moving to third on a base hit by Norton. A sacrifice fly by sophomore Luke Oliphant plated Lever and gave UMass a 1-0 lead, before Shapiro walked to load the bases once again. Hart then stepped up and delivered a double to left center to bring in Norton, Shapiro and redshirt sophomore Connor Smith and swell the advantage to 4-0.
La Salle halved its deficit in the seventh inning and threatened with an opportunity to tie the score at four. A pair of doubles pushed runs across and after a walk to nine-hitter Brian Tagoe, the Explorers suddenly had a bases-loaded chance with just one out and leadoff man Peyton Sorrels coming to the plate.
Harney battled with Sorrels in what became a 12-pitch at bat including seven consecutive foul balls, before Sorrels finally drove a 2-2 offering into shallow left center field. Shapiro hustled to make a nice diving catch and quickly fired to second base to double off the runner and get UMass out of the jam.
The Minutemen would tack on one more run in the ninth to seal the victory. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto worked a one-out walk and moved up 90 feet on a passed ball. After an infield single by Lever, Smith laced a single into center to score Videtto and move the advantage to 5-2.
La Salle's Mike Anthony (2-3) was on the hook for the loss, working 3.1 innings during which UMass tagged the starter for four runs on five hits and four walks, while Anthony struck out two.
The Minutemen are back on the diamond to host Hartford on Tues., April 30 at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
