Minutemen Rally for Doubleheader Split at La Salle

April 27, 2019 | Baseball

Videtto clubs first career grand slam to spark game two comeback victory

PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts baseball rallied from a 6-5 setback to claim a 9-6 victory in game two and split the team's doubleheader at La Salle's Hank DeVincent Field on Saturday. The doubleheader was scheduled after inclement weather postponed the originally scheduled series opener on Fri., April 26.

The series concludes with a single rubber game at noon on Sun., April 28.

Game 1
La Salle 6, Massachusetts 5
Seven different Minutemen contributed a hit and both senior Alec Norton and sophomore Luke Oliphant each had three in the eight and nine spots, respectively. Norton also scored twice in the setback and Oliphant had as many RBI.

Massachusetts battled back from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the contest at four-apiece by the sixth inning. Returning to the starting lineup after an injury, senior Logan Greene put the Minutemen on the board in the fourth. After junior Nolan Kessinger led off with a double, Greene stepped to the plate and clubbed a two-run homer over the right center field fence to narrow the score to 3-2.

The Explorers added one more in their half of the fourth, but Norton claimed that run back in the fifth when an errant pickoff attempt at first base allowed him to trot 90 feet home. Norton scored a second time the following inning when Oliphant dropped a two-out single into left.

La Salle broke the 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a two-RBI double off the bat of Tatem Levins. Oliphant drove freshman pinch runner Luke Gutos home with an eighth inning single, but the Minutemen later left the bases loaded and could not get any closer.

The win went to La Salle's Erik Janss (3-3) out of the bullpen and Connor Hinchliffe closed the final 1.2 innings for his 11th save. Despite the loss, senior Justin Lasko (2-5) went 6.2 innings and struck out seven, tying former Minuteman Jared Freni (2007-10) for the program career-record with his 45th career start as a Minuteman.

Game 2
Massachusetts 9, La Salle 6
Junior Eddy Hart, redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro and redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto had two hits apiece as the Maroon and White bounced back in the nightcap, with Videtto's day including the first grand slam of his career. Hart and Kessinger each drove in a pair of runs and Shapiro scored four different times.

La Salle once again was first to the scoreboard and had a 6-1 lead through four innings, but eight unanswered tallies by the Minutemen keyed the comeback victory.

Hart put UMass on the board in the third inning with a first-pitch triple to deep center field, bringing Shapiro in from first to even the score at one-all.

Following a five-spot by La Salle in the fourth, UMass answered with Videtto's grand slam. Shapiro opened the sequence being hit by a pitch, then Hart smacked a double into the right field corner and Kessinger worked a walk. With the bases now loaded, the Explorers made a call to the bullpen with Videtto headed to bat. He fouled off the first two pitches he saw before putting the next offering over the fence in right center field.

Three more came across in the sixth inning as the Minutemen took the lead for good. Hart was hit by a payoff pitch with the bases loaded to tie things up at six, then a Kessinger sacrifice fly paired with a throwing error put the squad in front, 8-6.

A bloop single in Kessinger's next at bat brought home another insurance run in Shapiro in the eighth, swelling the advantage to 9-6 and bringing the game to its final score.

Freshman Brad Collins worked 3.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen and allowed just two hits while fanning three. Collins earned the win (3-2) and senior Casey Aubin closed the door with three strikeouts in the final 1.2 innings, earning his fourth save of the year. La Salle's Matt Holt (2-2) took the loss.
