Collins’ Decathlon Performance Highlights Busy Saturday For Men’s Track & Field

The senior improved upon his second all-time mark at the Virginia Challenge
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's track and field senior Jonathan Collins improved upon his No. 2 all-time mark in decathlon at the Virginia Challenge on Saturday. The Minutemen also sent individuals to Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational and the Holy Cross Invitational.
Collins posted a score of 6,945 points to take fourth in the event out of 14 competitors. He ran 15.82 seconds to eighth in 110 meter hurdles for 753 points and was third in discus at 131 feet for 663 points. Collins took second in pole vault, clearing 15 feet, 1.25 inches for 702 points, sixth in javelin at 154 feet, 10 inches for 547 points and claimed ninth in 1,500 meter run for 519 points.
Also seeing action at the Virginia Challenge, Brian Gendron took 16th in the 800 meter run with a time of 1 minute, 52.28 seconds.
At the Larry Ellis Invitational, John Long captured fourth in javelin with a toss of 193 feet, while Nathan Adeyemi was fourth in triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, 11.5 inches.
Dawson Bathgate claimed seventh in steeplechase, clocking in at 9 minutes, 7.55 seconds.
Kendall Westhoff took eighth in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14 minutes, 44.52 seconds and Michael Famiglietti was 10th (14:48.88).
The Minutemen won two individual events at the Holy Cross invitational. Samuel Darkwa, Jr. won triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 11 inches and Flynn Mitchell was the top performer in javelin at 170 feet, 10 inches. Joseph Manchester (fourth, 163 feet, 6 inches) and Joseph San Giacomo (sixth, 147 feet, 9 inches) also finished in the top six in the event.
Michael McDonald was the runner up in the 5,000 meter run, clocking in at 15 minutes, 7.42 seconds and Matthew McDermott placed fifth in discus (133 feet, 8 inches).
UMass' 4x400 meter relay of Nicholas Santos, Colin Stoddard, Jackson Walker and Andrew Hanwell placed third at 3 minutes, 21.75 seconds.
The Minutemen will be back in action on Saturday, April 27, at the UNH Pre Conference Meet in Durham, New Hampshire.
