Videtto breaks ninth-inning tie with two-run single
ORONO, Maine – Redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto broke a 4-4 ninth inning tie with a two-run single as University of Massachusetts baseball held on for a 6-5 win over Maine at Mahaney Diamond Saturday night. The victory gives the Minutemen the series rubber game as Sunday's contest has been cancelled due to forecasted inclement weather.
Videtto, along with junior Eddy Hart, each contributed two-hit performances, while Videtto (2), Hart, junior Nolan Kessinger and redshirt freshman Kane Medina all drove in a run.
Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Massachusetts could push a run across. Joe Bramanti scored on a wild pitch in the second inning and Caleb Kerbs' RBI single in the sixth plated Danny Casals.
A three-spot in the seventh briefly put the Minutemen ahead for the first time. Medina laced his first collegiate double to deep left center, bringing senior Alec Norton all the way in from first base and Hart tied the score at two-all with a one-out knock up the middle scoring Medina. Kessinger then followed up with a triple to right center, bringing Hart home and giving UMass a 3-2 advantage. But Maine answered in its half of the seventh, pulling in front on a two-run homer off the bat of Hernen Sardinas.
The Minutemen equalized in the top of the eighth when Alec Norton grounded one to the middle of the infield before a throwing error on the play allowed senior Ryan Lever to continue in from third. Lever doubled into the right field corner with one out to begin the sequence.
Videtto's single in the ninth came on the first pitch he saw and fell in shallow left, scoring sophomore Luke Oliphant and redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro. The insurance run was key as Casals led off Maine's half of the ninth with a solo shot. Pinch hitter Brogan Searle-Belanger singled to reach base with the tying run, but redshirt sophomore Spencer Bergeron shut the door for the win inducing a fly ball and a strikeout.
Bergeron picked up his first win of the season (1-0) and Dillon Stimpson was on the hook for the loss (1-1). Sophomore Sean Harney received the starting nod for the Minutemen and although Harney did not factor into the decision, he worked 5.1 innings and struck out six while allowing only one earned run on four hits plus a walk.
With Sunday's game cancelled, the Minutemen turn their attention to a non-conference game versus Quinnipiac at Earl Lorden Field on Wed., April 24 at 3 p.m.
