Minutewomen Close Regular Season With 5-2 Win Over Fordham

Massachusetts heads into Atlantic 10 Championship with 17-4 overall record
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts tennis bested Fordham and capped the regular season with a 5-2 victory on the Mullins Center Tennis Courts during 2019 Senior Day on Friday afternoon. Winners of its last seven matches, the victory over the Rams bumped UMass to 17-4 overall and 5-1 in the Atlantic 10. Fordham fell to 10-10 on the year and 3-3 in league play.
Massachusetts rallied back for the win after Fordham took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Genevieve Quenville and Nicole Li downed Ruth Crawford and Ashley Avery at No. 3 by a 6-4 margin before Arina Taluyenko and Tatiana Grigoryan took a 7-5 match from Janja Kovacevic and Martina Bocchi.
Taluyenko won at No. 1 singles for the Rams, but Massachusetts rattled off five match victories at No. 2-6 for the team's 17th win of the year.
Jovana Bogicevic made quick work of her No. 6 singles match with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Alexis Zobeideh to pull Massachusetts even with Fordham, but Taluyenko followed with her singles win as the Rams briefly went back in front. Fordham's advantage only held momentarily until Crawford beat Quenville at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-3.
Anna Napadiy followed Crawford with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Li at No. 4 as Massachusetts moved in front. Bocchi provided the clinching point at No. 5 following a three-set battle with Gianna Insogna, in which Bocchi fought back from a first set loss for the 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 win. Jodie Lawrence-Taylor rounded out the team's strong showing with her 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 outcome over Grigoryan at No. 2.
The team honored Crawford, its lone senior, prior to the match.
The Minutewomen await their seeding in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, from April 24-27.
