Chaffee And Makar Collect First Team CCM/AHCA All-America Honors

The duo marks the eighth and ninth players in program history to receive the recognition and first since 2010.
BUFFALO, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts hockey sophomore forward Mitchell Chaffee and sophomore defenseman Cale Makar have been honored as CCM/AHCA Hockey All-Americans for the 2018-19 season, it was announced on Friday by the American Hockey Coaches Association. The pair are two of six first team selections from the East, the eighth and ninth players in UMass history to earn All-America distinction. In total nine individuals who have worn the Maroon and White have garnered a total of 10 All-America awards since 1972.
Chaffee, the 2018-19 Hockey East Scoring Champion, Herb Gallagher Award recipient (New England's best forward), New England All-Star and Hockey East First-Team All-Star, totaled 31 points over 23 league contests for an average of 1.35 points per-game. The Rockford, Michigan native also led Hockey East in assists in league play with 22, to go along with his nine goals.
Overall, he has 42 points to his credit over 40 contests on a team-high 18 goals with 24 assists and a plus/minus rating of +23. Chaffee ranks fourth overall in Hockey East in points, third in goals, tied for eighth in assists, tied for sixth in power-play points (14), tied for third in power-play goals (7) and tied for fourth in plus/minus. He has amassed 12 multi-point games thus far.
Makar, chosen as the Hockey East Player of the Year by unanimous selection, has also received the Leonard Fowle Award as New England Player of the Year and the Bob Monahan Award (New England's Best Defenseman) in addition to being named a Hockey East First-Team All-Star and a New England All-Star.
The Calgary, Alberta native has helped elevate Massachusetts hockey to unprecedented success in 2018-19, including program records in wins, conference wins and the team's first-ever Hockey East Regular Season Championship. The first defenseman in history to lead Hockey East in overall scoring with 49 points in 40 games, Makar ranks seventh in the nation in points per-game (1.23), sixth in assists per-game (0.82), third in defenseman scoring and second in plus-minus (+33). He was voted the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Ice Hockey Northeast Regional after leading UMass to its first Frozen Four berth with a goal and an assist and a +3 rating in 4-0 shutouts of Harvard and Notre Dame. In Thursday night's national semifinal, Makar logged his 33rd assist of the season and helped the Minutemen earn a spot in the NCAA Championship game for the first time in program history.
Makar has broken UMass' single-season records for points by a defenseman and assists by a defenseman this year, marks previously held by UMass Hall of Famer Thomas Poeck. He is currently second in program history for single-season assists, as well, and is fifth for single-season points.
