Minutemen Fall to UTRGV, 4-1

March 09, 2019 | Baseball

Massachusetts wraps up weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time

EDINBURG, Texas – University of Massachusetts baseball narrowed the deficit to one in the sixth inning, but UT Rio Grande Valley answered with a two-run bottom of the seventh en route to a 4-1 loss for the Minutemen on Saturday night at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The outcome drops the Maroon and White to an even 3-3 on the season and the Vaqueros improve to 11-4.

Both sides were limited to four hits apiece, but in the process senior Ryan Lever (6), redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro (6) and junior Eddy Hart (5) all extended their respective reached base streaks.

UTRGV was first to the scoreboard in its half of the fourth on Jacob Hirsh's RBI single before the Vaqueros doubled their lead the following inning after capitalizing on a fielding error that later allowed Conrado Diaz to come in.

Shapiro scored the lone run of the night for Massachusetts, leading off the top of the sixth with his second walk of the night. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto followed with a one-out double to left center before senior Logan Greene's sacrifice fly brought Shapiro home and put the Minutemen on the board, trailing at that time by a 2-1 score.

The Vaqueros would wrap up the night with a two-spot after seventh inning stretch, taking advantage of a passed ball and scoring Diaz on a sacrifice fly to left field by Elijah Alexander.

Sophomore Sean Harney received the loss (0-1) despite allowing only two earned runs in 6.1 innings of work. Freshman Jack Steele and senior Casey Aubin pitched the remainder of the night and did not allow a hit, while Aubin logged three strikeouts.

For UTRGV, Trevelle Hill (4-0) was the winning pitcher after going seven innings, allowing one run on four hits. Max Balderrama Jr. earned a two-inning save.

Massachusetts wraps up its three-game set with the Vaqueros on Sun., March 10 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
