A-10 Tournament Run Ends With Quarterfinal Loss to Fordham

March 08, 2019 | Women's Basketball

Massachusetts downed by Rams, 73-62, at the Palumbo Center

PITTSBURGH – University of Massachusetts women's basketball battled to the final buzzer, but a big second quarter proved the difference for No. 2 seed Fordham as the 10th-seeded Minutewomen fell, 73-62, on Friday in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals at the Palumbo Center. Massachusetts exits the tournament with an even record of 16-16, marking the program's first season with 16 or more wins since 2006-07. It also marked the team's first quarterfinal appearance since 2005.

Freshman and Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection Destiney Philoxy had 21 points to go with five rebounds for the Minutewomen, complemented by junior Hailey Leidel's double-double (19 points, 10 rebounds). Senior Jessica George wrapped up an outstanding career in Amherst with eight points, four boards and two assists.

Philoxy added three steals and junior Vashnie Perry added as many assists in the losing effort.

An early spark saw the Minutewomen jump out to a seven-point lead at the first quarter media timeout as sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey spearheaded the 9-2 game-opening run. The Rams battled back but Hampton-Bey, Philoxy and freshman Jessica Nelson helped carry UMass to a 17-15 lead at the end of the period.

Fordham answered with a hot shooting second quarter that saw Bre Cavanaugh go off for 13 points in the stanza. At the same time, UMass fought through some difficult stretches that the Rams capitalized on before heading into halftime ahead, 45-34.

In the final 10 minutes the Minutewomen responded after being faced with a 16-point deficit, stringing together a late 18-8 run that brought the game back within two possessions in the final one minute, 15 seconds. UMass looked for a stop on the next Fordham possession, but Mary Goulding countered with a three-pointer from the top of the key and sank a pair of free throws in the waning moments to seal the outcome.

Massachusetts had the team rebounding edge at 35-29 for the day, also claiming the upper hand in the paint (34-24), fast break points (21-2) and bench points (25-3).

With the win, Fordham moves on to the A-10 Semifinals on Sat., March 9 and will face either No. 3 Duquesne or No. 6 Saint Louis. Cavanaugh had a 29-points night on 12-of-21 shooting and Goulding had a double-double with 24 points and 10 boards.
