Prestigious honor recognizes up-and-coming coaches at all levels of women's basketball
ATLANTA – University of Massachusetts women's basketball assistant coach Candice Walker has been named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30, announced by the organization Wednesday. The Thirty Under 30 program recognizes 30 up-and-coming coaches age 30 and under at all levels of women's basketball.
"This is a tremendous honor for Candice," said head coach Tory Verdi. "She is a bright, driven young coach who has helped our players and program improve in countless ways. We are very fortunate to have her on our coaching staff and she has an extremely bright future in the coaching profession."
Walker first joined the Minutewomen in 2015-16 as director of operations before moving into an assistant coach capacity the following season. Helping oversee the program's offense, Walker has contributed to a theme of rapid upward trajectory for UMass as the Maroon and White posted improvements in 17 team statistical categories in 2017-18 over the previous year. This season the squad enters the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals with 16 wins, more than any campaign since 2006-07.
"I am very grateful and thankful for being selected as one of this year's Thirty Under 30 honorees," said Walker. "I am absolutely humbled by this award, but it wouldn't be possible without the help and support of the UMass women's basketball program, my colleagues and my peers."
Walker has also spent considerable time on the recruiting trail and helped assemble two nationally-renowned recruiting classes labeled by outsiders among the best in program history.
Before arriving in Amherst, Walker spent the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons as an assistant coach at Wilmington University (Del.). She also coached with Point Guard College after graduating from Loyola University (Md.) in 2013.
"The 30 coaches who have been named to receive the Thirty Under 30 Award are deserving of this recognition, and the WBCA congratulates them for distinguishing themselves early in their careers," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "These coaches have demonstrated eagerness, effectiveness, loyalty, love of the game, and a commitment to the student-athlete. We celebrate their effort on the basketball court as teachers and equally applaud the extensive role they play in impacting the lives of their student-athletes."
